Beginners Biblical Hebrew Part 2 2024 (Live Online Course)
Beginners Biblical Hebrew Part 2 is designed for students who have completed Beginners Biblical Hebrew Part 1, or for those with prior knowledge of the alphabet, basic vocabulary and grammar, and common biblical words. The course will continue to expand the student’s knowledge of common nouns and verbs, the Hebrew tense structure, and the beginnings of translation of the biblical text. There will be weekly homework exercises and in-class reading practice to guide the student towards fluency in word-recognition and sentence formation. Beginners Biblical Hebrew Part 2 will run for 10 weeks in Term 2, and will be followed by Beginners Biblical Hebrew Parts 3 and 4.
Classes will be taught over Zoom each Tuesday night, 30 April – 2 July 2024, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM (AEST).
Course Outline & Student Outcomes
Beginners Biblical Hebrew Part 2 is the second of an eight-part course study of Biblical Hebrew. It will be followed by Beginners Biblical Hebrew Parts 3 and 4 in 2024, and Intermediate Biblical Hebrew Parts 1 – 4 in 2025. The course is designed for people with limited time to spare for learning a new language, and will focus on enabling students to read Biblical Hebrew as quickly as possible.
Students will continue to use the textbook First Hebrew Primer: The Adult Beginner’s Path to Biblical Hebrew to deepen their knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary, sentence formation and translation of Biblical Hebrew.
The weekly classes will have the following structure: Review homework from previous week, introduce & discuss new material, read aloud in class, and introduce homework for the next week. There will also be periodic revision classes and assessment tasks.
By the end of the course, the student will have gained the following outcomes:

Forming the plural of Nouns & Verbs

Personal Pronouns ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘he’

Common Prepositions: ‘to’, ‘from’, ‘with’, ‘at’

Common Verbs in the Perfect Tense

Definite and Indefinite Direct Object: ‘The son / a son’.

Translation basics.

Course Instructor
The course will be taught by Sharon Dingjan. Sharon is a native Hebrew speaker who specialises in the languages and history of the Ancient Near East. Sharon holds a BA(Hons) from the University of Melbourne majoring in Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic / Syriac. Her research thesis was on Covenant in Pre-Exilic Prophetic Literature. Sharon has taught Biblical and Modern Hebrew and ANE Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne, and privately for many years. Sharon currently works with the ministry of Celebrate Messiah in Melbourne.
