Description
Bridge Builder: Using the Jewish Prayer Book to Talk about Yeshua
Course Description
Why study the Jewish Prayer Book (called Siddur in Hebrew)? Because it is the book that Jewish people know best! The Siddur is one of the main sources of Jewish religious and spiritual identity, and almost every Jewish person knows some of the prayers in it. Through study of the traditional Jewish prayers, we will explore the rich theological themes of the Jewish faith.
This will create an atmosphere for deeper discussion of Jewish and Messianic theologies with the goal of understanding and achieving a more sensitive, effective witness to the Jewish people. As we study the Siddur, we will also attempt to develop an authentic and theologically nuanced Messianic Jewish worship service.
Course Outline & Student Outcomes:
By satisfactory completion of readings, reflection questions, and other assignments, coupled with daily preparation and participation in classroom dialogue, the students will be enabled to:
A. Understand the structure of Jewish liturgical prayer.
B. Explain how the liturgy and rituals of Judaism shape Jewish worship and lifestyle.
C. Articulate how Jewish theology understands the following terms: holiness, service/worship, acts of lovingkindness, repentance, prayer, forgiveness, redemption, heresy, the righteous, priesthood, charity, blessing and cursing, justice, covenant-kindness, and covenant.
D. Adapt the Siddur for personal and corporate use in Messianic Jewish lifestyle and ministry. Customise elements for use as a Messianic Jewish Siddur in a Shabbat or bar/bat mitzvah service.
