Spikenard, also called Pure Nard, is a sweet smelling aromatic flowering plant and was a highly prized, costly aromatic herb imported from the Himalayas in ancient times. It has long been used in essential oils and perfumes and was mentioned in the Bible in the Song of Solomon and in the Gospels’ accounts of women anointing Jesus.
- Old Testament: It is used as a metaphor for love and beauty in the Song of Solomon 1:12 and Song of Solomon 4:13-14. “While the king sits at his table, my spikenard sends forth its fragrance.”
- New Testament: Mary of Bethany (and an unnamed woman in Mark) poured expensive spikenard from an alabaster jar over Jesus to honor him shortly before his crucifixion (Mark 14:3, John 12:3)
