Passover is the celebration of the Israelite’s escape from slavery in Egypt as told in Exodus. On the first night of Passover families gather to celebrate with a traditional meal called the Seder. Seder means “order” in Hebrew referring to the specific organization of the traditional meal and the telling the story of the exodus from a special book called “Hagaddah” which means “Telling” in Hebrew. It is a time to reconnect with the plight of the Israelites and what freedom really means. The Passover Seder is full of symbolic items and meanings. One of the main features on the Seder Table is the Seder Plate. It is a large plate with sections divided for various objects symbolizing the exodus. Enjoyment of all the items surrounding the Passover meal such as the Seder plate, the cup of Elijah, the Matzah holder are constant reminders of the powerful events in the days of Moses. The New Testament relates the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples to be the Passover Seder. It is at this opportunity that Jesus shares the “New Covenant” using the Matzah and the wine to represent his body and his blood.
