Description
The Life and Songs of King David (Live Online Course)
“The Life and Songs of King David” explores the rise of the shepherd from Bethlehem who became Israel’s king, warrior, poet, and covenant servant. Through narrative, history, and the Psalms, we will examine David not merely as a national hero, but as a deeply human man whose life reveals both remarkable devotion to the LORD and profound moral failure. Join us for an eight-episode journey through the life, worship, triumphs, failures, and legacy of King David, one of the most significant and complex figures in all of Scripture.
The series begins with an overview of David’s life and rise to kingship, followed by studies of some of the most important songs connected to his life and reign. Together we will explore the great Psalm of thanksgiving in 1 Chronicles 16:8–36, the moving lament over Saul and Jonathan, and close readings of various Psalms (including 3, 24, 59, and 132), placing each Psalm within its historical setting.
We will also examine the darker moments of David’s life, bringing together the narratives of his sin with Bathsheba, his repentance, and his later sin in numbering the people of Israel. These events reveal the devastating consequences of pride, lust, and misplaced trust, while also displaying the depth of divine mercy and covenant faithfulness. Particular attention will be given to the judgment following the census and the profound significance of the threshing floor of Araunah, the future site of the Temple. From there we will explore David’s preparations for the House of the LORD and the central role the Temple played in Israel’s worship and Messianic hope.
Drawing from the biblical text, Israel’s history, and Jewish background sources, this series seeks to present David in all his complexity: shepherd, king, psalmist, sinner and worshipper.
