David’s Tower Kiddush Cup with square saucer
This Kiddush Cup is silver-plated with a beautiful depiction of David’s Tower in the Old City of Jerusalem on it and the accompanying saucer. The saucer is unusually shaped in a square. This Kiddush Cup is a striking addition to any Shabbat or Jewish festival table.
What is a Kiddush Cup? The word “Kiddush” means sanctification in Hebrew. On Shabbat and during many Jewish holidays, the meal begins with a special blessing over a cup of wine. The special goblet used for this blessings is called a Kiddush Cup.
The Kiddush Cup plays a particularly significant role during the Passover Seder. During the Seder, four cups of wine are used and each cup has a distinctive symbol. Each cup represents the four expressions of redemption God made to the ancient Hebrews as explained in Exodus 6:6-7. The first cup, “I will take you out…”; the second cup “I will save you…”; the third cup, “I will redeem you…” and the fourth cup, “I will make you a nation…” The Kiddush Cup is filled four times and passed around the table for everyone to drink from for each of these redemptions.
